ON THIN ICE – UK’s Destiny Between COVID And BREXIT

With Brexit on its way and a new mutation of the COVID virus discovered, the old English island may face an unpredictable destiny, an unprecedented path.

The economic and political situation of the world has never seen such a deep unbalance as today. We are facing the most delicate portion of an international crisis, perhaps the darkest year since WW2. For certain analysts, this is a new war, the weapon of excellence is information and the soldiers are now part of the media. UK, a country that has always represented a milestone of European identity is now the new enemy? With Brexit on its way and a new mutation of the COVID virus discovered, the old English island may face an unpredictable destiny, an unprecedented path.

BREXIT countdown:

To understand the evolution of BREXIT we shall go back to 2017, year that defined the choice of the UK to leave the EU through an important 52% voters that agreed on the fact that leaving would be the best choice for the country. In these final days of 2020, along with all the other chaotic events that shocked the world, there is a crucial negotiation going on between the EU and the English Parliament. Socio-economic agreements and deals are being discussed and soon the debates will reach the conclusion. As it always happens in these very complex dynamics, even BREXIT brought some hidden interests with it and we can witness it by major factors such as information management and mass communications.

Let’s revise the main steps that brought us to the current BREXIT situation. The agreement has been signed and the following is reported on this official website:

 https://eur-lex.europa.eu/content/news/Brexit-UK-withdrawal-from-the-eu.html

The United Kingdom withdrew from the European Union on 31 January 2020.

On 23 June 2016, the United Kingdom held a referendum on their membership of the EU. The UK voted to leave the EU by 52% to 48%.

On 29 March 2017 the UK notified the European Council of its intention to leave the EU, thus formally triggering Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union.

On 30 January 2020, the EU ratified the Withdrawal agreement.

On 31 January 2020 at midnight (CET), when the withdrawal agreement entered into force, the United Kingdom left the European Union.

The entry into force of the withdrawal agreement marked the end of the period under Article 50 TEU and the start of a transition period due to last until 31 December 2020.

COVID 2.0:

The real name for this variation is truly made of numbers: B 1.1.7 is how science is calling it. Regarding the natural features of this new virus there is very little to say due to the lack of information we have about it. A flood of fake or unconfirmed news is spreading through the net at all levels. The question that many are making is: “why are we worried only about this British variation?”. Scientists claim that variations and mutations are very common in virus and that COVID 19 is no exception to this rule. At least other 30 mutations have been recorded worldwide.

England has been a big source of innovation ever since but in the contemporary situation, defined and governed by information, holding the Guinness for the first significant mutation of the most hated virus on hearth is not something that can be ignored when evaluating the reputation of a certain state. A country that was always treated as a land of heroes and saviors is now becoming the image of traitors of the EU or even a land of “diseased foreigners”? Winter has come and never as today we can say that the destiny of UK is on thin ice, an ice made of the most fragile of substances, words.
