Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday 14 June 2021 that he is awaiting an urgent response on the possibility of Ukraine becoming a NATO member. Particularly in the direction of US President Biden, Ukrainian President has asked for a clear “YES” or “NO” on this possibility.
In several interviews with various news agencies, the President of Ukraine has repeatedly declared Ukraine’s intention to become a member of NATO. He also stressed the importance of this choice regarding the unresolved conflict in Donbas and the tense relations with Russia.
It is no secret that Russia is strongly opposed to this. Ukraine’s NATO membership would mean for Russia having a member of the alliance on its doorstep.
US President Joe Biden invited Zelensky to meet him in Washington in July, and the Ukrainian President said he would talk there about the US military and economic support that Ukraine is relying on.
However, President Biden, despite Ukrainian pressure, has not yet spoken out firmly on the issue, stating: “It remains to be seen.”

It must be stressed that the possibility of Ukraine becoming a NATO member could have a very important geopolitical weight, given the inevitable consequences Russia will take if Ukraine’s request is accepted.
